UNRAVELLING forms the beginning of an exploration with loose fibres; synthetic hair, horse hair, brush hairs and the fibres from fabrics that I have unravelled.
By containing and exposing these fibres through various means; casting in resin and cutting through to reveal a cross section, making marks with brushes that expose the fibres and plaiting and unravelling, I am exploring ways of expressing the highly emotive and symbolic role that threads and hair play in our cultural history. Threads in myths and folk tales represent time, thought, plot and journey. An exposed thread or a frayed edge of an item of clothing shows it has been worn, loved and time has passed. I am interested in the emotive and sentimental quality that an unravelled thread or loose fibre holds and various ways that I can contain this thought in objects and materials.
